Mojave turquoise is created exclusively by the Arizona Kingman Mine in Mojave County, Arizona, USA. This unique process uses a hydraulic press to organize numerous Kingman turquoise pieces into one conglomerate by introducing a bronze or copper metal matrix throughout the base network of turquoise. The purple or green colour is the result of a dye. Once the turquoise is pressed or assembled, it is stabilized to harden the stone. It ranks 5 to 6 on the Moh's hardness scale.
The Gemological Institute of America did a detailed exam of this composite stone and found it to be genuine turquoise. Small pieces of genuine turquoise are bonded into a larger piece and whether dyed or not, the end product is considered to be genuine. This technique produces quite magical stones with their delicate and intricate designs, while recycling otherwise useless but genuine turquoise chips.
